Are you willing to change your story?

  • by

I have become very aware lately of the many reasons people tell me why they can’t do something. There are circumstances, situations, constraints, reasons, issues and stories as to why it can’t be done. We can always find lots of those.
Not enough money. Work takes up too much time. Not 100% sure what I want. Family commitments. No energy. Fear. Laziness. Lack of skill. Lack of experience.

But you know what?

Only YOU are responsible for your future.

Sure environment and circumstances play a part. But I think we overestimate those constraints and underestimate ourselves in that equation. You – you and your choices, play the biggest part in making change.

We all have plenty of ideas why something won’t work and we could be right. But we will never know if we don’t try. And once we try we might find out surprising information we would never otherwise have known.

So make a choice and take an action.

The action will add to your story. It may bring in new characters or new locations. It might mean a love interest enters. Or a villain takes centre stage. It might end in tears or laughter. But the thing is you won’t know until you try.

Don’t end up with a story book full of blank pages. Write your future with your actions today. You are in control of your story, your memoir. As Tim Minchin says so clearly in the Naughty song from the Matilda Musical:

If you sit around and let them get on top, you won’t change a thing.
Just because you find that life’s not fair, it
doesn’t mean that you just have to grin and bear it.
If you always take it on the chin and wear it,
you might as well be saying you think that it’s OK.

And that’s not right.
And if it’s not right, you have to put it right.

But nobody else is gonna put it right for me.Nobody but me is gonna change my story.

So today you write your story (and tomorrow, and the next day…).
What do you want it to say?
