To what end?

When colleagues started throwing in “As Robyn would say, to what end?” into conversations, I realised that I had a catch phrase without even realising. (Not quite as catchy as “Make my day” or “I pity the fool” but you never know…..)

To what end?

By this I mean:

  • Why are we doing this?
  • Is it worth our time and effort?
  • Do we need to focus on it?
  • What are we hoping to achieve here?

And the more I think about this question (and the more I use it!),  I think it is really important to ask this in all parts of our lives.

To what end am I doing this?
Do I want to put my time and energy into this project or person?
What am I hoping to get from this piece of work?

So I ask you,

that task you were going to do today – to what end?
that money you are saving – to what end?
that job you hate – to what end?
those long hours at work – to what end?

Be clear why you are doing what you are doing.
Don’t just do it for the sake of it.
Or because someone told you to.
Or because you are trying to please someone.

Do it because you really want the outcome from it.
Do it because it is worth it to you.
